Machining and grinding processes involve the removal of metal by the formation of a chip. A great amount of heat is released from the metal deformation. Heat is also generated by friction between the tool and the chip/workpiece. The fluid has the primary tasks of removing heat and reducing frictional forces. Thus, it must effectively wet out and penetrate the tool/workpiece interface and provide proper balance of cooling and lubrication. The fluid has many other functions, including the control of residues, corrosion, bacteria, fungus and many solid and liquid contaminants. It must do all this and be compatible with the operator using it. It should also be compatible with the metal, the operation, the tooling, water, filtration, oil rejection characteristics and optimize their function if possible.

Metal forming is a process in which metal is manipulated to create a new shape. Processes used for metal forming include stamping, drawing, heading, forging, extruding, and roll forming. All modes of lubrication can be important in these applications. Hydrodynamic lubrication improves with increasing viscosity. Boundry lubrication is provided by polar additives like fatty acids and esters. And extreme pressure lubrication can be obtained with additives that chemically react with the metal surface like certain sulfurized and chlorinated materials.
Straight oils are not water extendable, although they can be cut with other oils. Soluble oils and Synthetics are all water-extendable products which provide excellent cooling and superior cleanability over straight oil products wherever they can be used. Factors to consider in choosing a metal forming lubricant include: metal type, operation, type of tooling, application method, shipping/storage conditions, and subsequent processes.

Corrosion is an electro-chemical process that results in the discoloration, pitting, and eventual erosion of a metal surface. Uncontrolled corrosion can result in equipment damage, increased power consumption, scrapped parts, and other economic stresses that can be avoided through the use of proper corrosion preventatives.
A corrosion preventative provides chemical inhibition or a physical barrier to the corrosion process. They normally contain a carrier such as, solvent, oil or water. Various polar additives are used to form a film on the metal surface. The product may also contain wetting agents, oxidation inhibitors, neutralizers, couplers, and additives that aid with water displacement.
Factors in choosing a product include: metal type, desired film type, term of protection, application method, shipping/storage conditions, and subsequent processes and coating.

The process of quenching involves heating a metal to an elevated temperature followed by submersion in a fluid which allows for a controlled cooling rate to effect desired metallurgical changes in the metal. The selection of a quenching fluid for a particular process should consider the quenching speed, operating temperatures, and application. Quenching speed influences the hardness and the depth of hardness obtained. Quenching oils can be divided into normal and high-speed oils. Operating temperature is an especially important consideration as it affects oil life, quenching speed, viscosity and drag-out, and component distortion. Cold quenching oils, designed for general use at temperatures of up to 2000F, are used when part distortion is not a problem. Hot quenching (or "martempering") oils, designed for use at higher temperatures of up to 400OF, are used for larger parts, when fast surface cooling could lead to distortion and cracking of the parts. Maintaining the surface at a higher temperature allows the entire part to cool to the Martensite start, and final slow cooling – after removal from the oil – minimizes stress and distortion. Process Fluid’s quench products are designed to remove heat from metals at a controlled rate for precision results. High quality refined base stacks, selected accelerators, and effective anti-oxidant packages are blended to maintain the oil’s performance for long periods of continued use, particularly at elevated temperatures. A relatively new development in the field of quenching is Process Fluid’s X-Quench line of water-based organic polymer quenchants. These products include organic polymers, corrosion inhibitors, and other additives to produce concentrates that can be extended with water for ready-to-use quenching solutions. They function by depositing a thin film of the polymer onto the hot metal surface. X-Quench products can be used for hardening processes, forgings, and casting. Where there is the risk of fore, or if smoke is a problem, X-Quench products can eliminate the hazard and help improve process performance. These high efficiency lubricants are specifically designed for use with precise fluid application equipment. They provide concentrated lubrication for a wide variety of applications, including forming, stamping, milling, drilling, sawing, and tapping. The benefits of this approach include extended tool life and improved surface finish based on maximum friction reduction and prevention of build-up on tooling and dies. Because very small quantities of lubricant are used, workpieces, chips and equipment are virtually dry, requiring little or no cleaning. Misting is significantly reduced. Fluid disposal cost is eliminated and the value of chips is enhanced. The PL line of products have been formulated to provide maximum boundry and/or extreme pressure lubrication. We have carefully selected ingredients which optimize oxidation resistance, stain inhibition, and compatibility with elastomers and equipment. Process Fluids Incorporated offers a full line of precise applied lubricants and application equipment that can improve the safety and productivity of your workplace.
